My 2 month old baby seems to be pushing hard everytime he wants to poop of late, i dont give him water just breast milk and Nan.Could this be a sign of constipation or another problem.

A baby is said to be constipated if he/she passes stool less than 3 times in a week or passes mostly hard motions over a period of at least two weeks. In young babies like yours, constipation mainly occurs upon introduction of formula milk; usually some babies dont tolerate cow milk based formula feeds well, while sometimes, the constitution of the formula may not be appropriate. You could confirm if your baby is not tolerating the formula milk well by withdrawing the formula for about three to five days and observing bowel habits. It is important that you make sure that you are preparing the formula milk according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you are already doing this, you could try and make the formulation a bit more dilute; lets say by adding clean water equivalent to an 1/8th of the amount that makes the initial formulation. To help ease the discomfort of passing hard stools, you can gently apply water based lubricants like K-Y jelly on the baby's anal opening. Warning signs to be on the lookout for are; frequent accompanying vomiting, distension of the abdomen, fever, irritability, and blood in stool. If constipation persists, you should see your paediatrician.
